Spotter Day Istrana 51° Stormo - Spotter Day Istrana 51st Wing

The Aviation

English version

100 years, that's a lot for Italian Air Force, which this year rightly feels like celebrating, and due to this prestigious milestone many events will take place in 2023 where women and men of the Arma Azzurra will be engaged.

One of these extraordinary events is the Spotter Day organized in Istrana, home of the 51st Wing, named after Pilot Sergeant Ferruccio Serafini.

Extraordinary is just the right adjective because it is unlikely that an italian Commander will open the doors of "his home" and have as guests more than 200 Spotters to photograph what the Wing has in his own ranks.

The spotter

Let's take a step back and talk about the spotter figure.

Historically, the spotter was born in England and used to have a pencil and notebook with him . He was an aircraft enthusiast who meticulously took notes of marking serial numbers, models and companies on his notebook.

During the time he evolved, with the advent of cameras he began to impress, on film first, slides and gradually in digital every aircraft he could see at various airports fence around the world.

If the world of civil aviation created few problems for these enthusiasts, the military sector, with all its consequences of public order, security and secrecy of the operational flights, the spotter became an uncomfortable figure, to be controlled and removed from airports with civilian and military law enforcement.

The spotter in Italy has gained some trust also in the civilian sphere, with the creation of clubs. The attitudes have softened and in some cases, see the example of Malpensa, Verona or Bologna where certain rules were taken in place and respected.

They are tolerated or even seen as a resource to be used as a form of passive security, ready to report malicious intruders or suspicious situations to the public security forces in charge.

In the military, on the other hand, this is still "borderline" a victim of legacies of old Royal Decrees, which have been derubricated but never dormant.

That is why, deciding to let more than 200 people into an operational base, on a weekday with the normal working activity of personnel is an uncommon event that has written a new chapter in Italian "spotter" history.

The Day

The request for participation was made with a special form including the applicant's biographical data plus an overview of his or her social channels, useful for having a spotters’ database.

Once confirmation arrived everyone got an assigned number, that with an ID was all to grant access to the 51st Wing on the early afternoon of Thursday 23.

A careful backpack check, a scan through the metal detector, we were assembled in the base theater where we were welcomed by Command Pilot Colonel Emanuele Chiadroni.

"We are the first Wing in Italy to do something like this and so a round of applause to you for attending."

An event desired and organized since he took office months ago as Wing Commander.

"To give a chance for those who love us as much as you do to come to us, to see what we do and take home the shot that can make you remember the day and a little bit make you feel at home."

"We consider you friends of the Wing today and you are part of our Team."

Already these few words highlight the closeness of the 51st with its fans.

The briefing continued with a brief history of the Wing and the mission of the department, highlighting the transition made from the third-generation AMX fighter, close to retirement, to the fourth-generation Eurofighter with the new deployment, from 2020, with integrated

air defense tasks with the other bases scattered over the territory of Grosseto, Gioia del Colle and Trapani.

There was no lack of an out-of-schedule, again by Cmdr. Chiadroni, who called on Achille Vigna, a true Dean among spotters, who was therefore invested for the occasion as "oldest spotter" and awarded with a souvenir medal.

With an eye on safety regulations , very important since the program included very close photographic positions, we concluded the informative part and took to the operational area for a brief static display of the historic aircraft that have flown under the 51st's insignia.

It is always exciting to be able to be face to face with the Spillone or the G-91, especially for the many young people attending who have never seen those aircraft fly.

Time to arrange ourselves in a safe area so that we can admire two AMXs, the special livery made for the 80th anniversary of the 103rd Group that just last week celebrated the milestone and a second single-seater, pass us by a few meters away. Couple of passes of the new fifth-generation F-35 fighter aircraft that arrived from the Brescia air force base of the Red Devils located in Ghedi.

Four coaches brought us to the runway limits, in favor of light even though the sun did not show at all, where the real program of the day kicked off.

Takeoffs and passages of the two AMXs with the presence of a Tornado from the Ghedi base, the takeoff of an EFA that then made formation with the Ghiblis and a full AB takeoff of an EFA that certainly woke up from the winter slumber the area in front of the base.

The only sore point was the weather that did not want to cooperate by lowering the light and forcing everyone to work at very high ISO with all the problems involved.

A problem, in spite of everything, passed in the background to hear the enthusiastic comments of the many friends I met in the field for the willingness of the staff to try to put everyone in the best conditions to photograph.

Only words of praise for Commandant Chiadroni and all his staff who received a very warm applause from all spotters at the official circle.

The day ended in the best possible way with the precious gift to all including a beautiful commemorative lithograph of Spotter Day, a nice pin with the "Black Cat Behind a Camera" and a personal badge.

We leave the base at a truly unusual time, the dusk has given way to the night and the words of Cmdr. Chiadroni, "from today You are friends of the 51st" and "I take it for granted that You are my Staff" still ring loudly in my head.

Thank you Commander, thank you Italian Air Force, proud and proud to have been part of this unforgettable historical moment.
